The downside is that if it works, the drive will erase all of the free space, so there is no possibility of recovering anything that was deleted in error. If it works, the drive will erase lots of blocks ready for the next write and the much slower erase before write will be avoided. When it was new, it was all erased, so it was faster.īut most USB flash drives don't support trim. Its only erasing ~3-4mb/s, so that's all it can write. In the background, the flash disk is performing slow erase cycles to be able to write your new data. Its a limitation of the flash drive, even though its USB 2 and might in theory reach 40Mb/sec before it reached the bus limit.įor the first few seconds, the ~80mb/s you see is the file being read to your RAM. So I've been wondering is the slow transfer speed a limitation of the usb drive or is it due to some mis-configuration? My cousins used to tell me that on Windows transfer speeds are way faster than Linux but I honestly haven't touched Windows in half a decade now so can't really confirm that. As soon as the transfer starts, for the first few seconds (may be 5-10s) the transfer speed averages around ~80mb/s and after that it drops to ~3-4mb/s. So instead of the usual 'cp' command I've been using rsync mainly because it has an interesting progress bar and a few useful features but not sure in terms of performance if its any different.Īnyway while using rsync to transfer a large ~5GB file to a usb, I noticed a few things.
